Authentic Whirling Dervishes Ceremony in Istanbul
Whirling Dervishes Ceremony
The Mevlevi Order was established in the thirteenth century, in the Ottoman Empire, upon relying on the knowledge transmitted by Persian theologian Rumi. One of its practices was the spinning dance called Sema; nowadays, the members of the Order still perform it in Turkey.
The ritual takes place in an authentic monastery belonging to the Mevlevi sect. Due to this, the spectators not only observe the ceremony, but also become acquainted with Sufism, learn about the Sufi communities, and listen to traditional music. After several days of fasting and by continuously whirling, while dressed in long dress-like white attires, the persons involved in the ritual aim to establish a connection between this world and the next. At some point, they enter a trance state, which is believed to facilitate the mystical journey each person makes for finding the truth and the perfection. Because this is a powerful unique ritual, only those practicing it are familiar with all its concealed meanings.
Considering the fact that this is a spiritual and learning experience, all those wishing to attend it must wear proper clothes (long sleeves and long pants or skirts) and show respect for this belief and its followers.
Remember that no flash photos or clapping are allowed during the ritual. As well, all questions concerning the Islam, Sufi and the Dervishes will get proper answers before the ceremony.
This is not just about swirling men wanting to reach some sort of Nirvana. It is a piece of history, a religious tradition passed on from generations whose importance was acknowledged by UNESCO; it proclaimed the Mevlevi Sema Ceremony one of the Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.
